Phyllida (2019, 24’)

Dir. Cosima Spender
Prod. Cosima Spender, Valerio Bonelli, Dorothea Gibbs
Third Channel

This beautiful film follows the artist Phyllida Barlow at work in her studio and leads up to her solo exhibition at the Royal Academy — “the most inspiring show of the year.” The artist discusses her work process, ideas and life and we witness pieces being formed from start to finish.

The film was presented at screenings at the Royal Academy to accompany Barlow’s show, from February 23 to June 23 2019.

It was a joy to work with the director Cosima Spender again, who I had worked with on three previous documentaries. I used a mixture of live strings, prepared piano, other found sounds and electronics for the score.

Piano recorded at Sonica Studios, London. Strings performed by Richard Curran, piano by Jack Westwell and myself. Score mixed by Rich Aitken.

Scored for prepared piano, violin and electronics.
